Cove point LNG export project approved

October 20, 2014

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has authorized Dominion to convert its Cove Point, Maryland, liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal on the Chesapeake Bay into a 5.75 million Tpy export facility.

The $3.4 to $3.8 billion project will include modifications to an existing compressor station. Completion is due in 2017.

Dominion said the export capacity has been fully subscribed through 20-year service agreements with Sumitomo Corp. of Japan, Tokyo Gas Co. and GAIL Ltd. of India.

IHI/Kiewit Cove Point, a joint venture between IHI E&C International Corp. and Kiewit Corp. is the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the new liquefaction facilities.

Cove Point is the fourth LNG export project to receive FERC approval and the first on the East Coast. Fourteen LNG export proposals are pending at the agency.
